There is something very special about holding a pearl in your hand and knowing that it began its life in the ocean.

When I first started working more closely with pearls, I found myself becoming fascinated by the story behind them. We often see the finished pearl, glowing softly in a beautiful piece of jewellery, but there is an entire natural process behind that little sphere of light.

And that story is what makes pearls so special to me.

Where South Sea Pearls Begin

South Sea pearls are grown in a beautiful oyster called Pinctada maxima, one of the largest pearl oysters in the world.

These oysters are capable of producing some of the most beautiful pearls, known for their impressive size, thick nacre and beautiful natural lustre.

They can be found in shades of white, silver and gold, with each pearl developing its own unique character.

I love that there isn't a formula for exactly what a pearl will look like.

Nature has a say in it.

A Pearl Takes Time

The process of creating a pearl is a slow one.

A nucleus and a small piece of mantle tissue are carefully introduced into the oyster. The oyster then begins producing nacre, gradually building layer upon layer around the nucleus.

Over time, those layers become the pearl.

It isn't something that happens quickly. The pearl needs time to develop its size, shape and lustre.

I think that patience is part of what makes pearls so beautiful.

There is no rushing nature.

No Two Pearls Are Exactly Alike

One of my favourite things about working with pearls is their individuality.

Even when pearls come from the same type of oyster, they can look completely different.

Some are beautifully round. Others have organic shapes and little imperfections that give them personality. Some have a bright white glow, while others have soft silver or warm golden tones.

Rather than seeing these differences as flaws, I see them as part of the beauty.

They remind us that each pearl is naturally created.

And each one has its own story.

The Journey From Oyster to Jewellery

Not every oyster produces a pearl suitable for jewellery, and only a small percentage produce the exceptional pearls that have remarkable size, shape and lustre.

So when a pearl finally makes its way into a piece of jewellery, there is much more behind it than we might realise.

There is the oyster.

The ocean.

Time.

Care.

And nature.

I think knowing this makes a piece of pearl jewellery feel even more meaningful.

Pearls and the Beauty of a Wedding Day

Perhaps this is why pearls have remained such a beautiful choice for brides.

A wedding is one of those moments where we naturally look for things that feel timeless.

Something you can look back on years later and still love.

Pearls have that quality.

Their soft glow is elegant without being too much, and they sit beautifully alongside a wedding dress, whether the style is classic, relaxed, modern or romantic.

And I especially love that bridal pearls don't have to be worn only once.

A pair of pearl earrings can become part of your wardrobe long after the wedding day. A necklace can be worn on anniversaries, special dinners or simply whenever you want to wear something meaningful.

Designed in Broome

The Courthouse Collection is proudly designed in Broome, Western Australia, where I draw inspiration from the natural beauty around me.

Our pearls are not sourced from Broome, but Broome is where our jewellery is designed.

Living and creating here has naturally influenced my work, from the colours of the Kimberley to the ocean, the landscape and the relaxed Australian way of life.

Each piece is an original design, created with the intention of bringing together the natural beauty of pearls with a distinctly Australian sense of style.

For me, jewellery doesn't need to be complicated to be special.

Sometimes it is the simplest piece that stays with you the longest.

A Pearl With a Story

The more I learn about pearls, the more I appreciate what makes them different from other materials we use in jewellery.

They are created by nature.

They take time.

They are all slightly different.

And eventually, they become something that can be worn and treasured by someone else.

That journey feels quite beautiful to me.

From an oyster in the ocean, to a pearl, to an original piece of jewellery designed here in Broome, and finally to the person who chooses to wear it.

That's the part of pearls I love most.

They begin as something created by nature, but once they become jewellery, they can become part of someone's own story too.
